Description

Highest elevated activities are observed in progressive muscular dystrophy (Duchenne). Lower elevated activities are found in dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and limb-girdle dystrophy. The increase in activities becomes less as muscle mass declines. Aldolase increases have also been observed in myocardial infarction, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, and obstructive jaundice, prostate tumors, and chronic leukemias.

Creatine kinase (CK) generally provides sufficient diagnostic information; thus aldolase monitoring is not routinely recommended. Increased aldolase activities, in the presence of normal CK activities, have been observed in patients with eosinophilic fasciitis.
